OLYMPIC GAMES PARIS 2024

There is no doubt Paris 2024 reshaped the Olympic legacy. Novak Djokovic claimed Olympic gold in tennis, adding a glittering new achievement to his already legendary Grand Slam career. On the gymnastics floor, Team USA’s œRedemption Tour stole the headlines as Simone Biles made a triumphant return, leading her team to gold in the women’s final and securing an individual all-around gold. The 22-year-old swimmer, Leon Marchand, became France’s ˜golden boy’, winning four gold medals, more than any other French athlete at a single Olympics. His victory in the 200m medley, met with deafening cheers of œallez! as he powered to victory, drawing comparisons to swimming legend Michael Phelps.
Meanwhile, Breaking made its Olympic debut, captivating audiences “ but will it dance its way back into the Olympic lineup?

UEFA EURO 2024

UEFA EURO 2024 delivered a historic and unforgettable tournament. At just 16, Lamine Yamal made history as the youngest player and goal scorer in a European Championship, showcasing the next generation’s potential. Jude Bellingham’s jaw-dropping bicycle kick for England against Slovakia was a contender for goal of the tournament, propelling them into extra time. Ultimately, Spain reinstated their dominance with their fourth UEFA EURO title, solidifying their country’s football supremacy, after winning in the UEFA Nations League and recent Women’s World Cup.

WIMBLEDON CHAMPIONSHIPS
1 – 14 July 2024
Wimbledon 2024 brought high drama and heartfelt moments. Carlos Alcaraz defeated seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in a gripping rematch of the 2023 Men’s Singles final, claiming his fourth Grand Slam title at just 21, cementing his status as one of the sport’s future greats. On Centre Court, emotions ran high as fans bid an emotional farewell to Andy Murray, celebrating his storied career. Meanwhile, Barbora KrejÄÃková shone on the grass, capturing her first Wimbledon Singles title in style, marking a defining moment in her career.

PREMIER LEAGUE

Sport 24 viewers were treated to an unforgettable 2023/24 Premier League season as Manchester City secured their fourth consecutive league title with a decisive 3-1 victory over West Ham on the final day. For Arsenal, it was another season of near misses as they finished second.¯Haaland remained a focal point, with all 27 goals from the 2023/24 season celebrated as part of the league’s official highlights.
Off the pitch, the season was marked by the emotional farewell of Jürgen Klopp, who announced his departure from Liverpool after nearly nine years at the helm.

The Kansas City Chiefs became the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since the 2003/04 New England Patriots. Their Super Bowl LVIII victory over the San Francisco 49ers was defined by Patrick Mahomes’ extraordinary leadership and standout performance.
In a (Super Bowl) world where entertainment meets sports, it would be remis not to mention singing sensation Taylor Swift. Her relationship with Travis Kelce single handedly brought millions of new fans to the sport. Bring on Super Bowl LIX & THAT halftime show!

NBA

LeBron James and his son, Bronny James, made history as the first active father-son duo to play in the same game, marking a milestone moment for the league and sport entirely. Meanwhile, Celtics clinched the NBA title with a dominant 4-1 series victory over the Dallas Mavericks, driven by stellar performances from Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, played pivotal roles throughout the Finals.

THE OPEN
14 – 21 July 2024
Golf fans were captivated in 2024 as Xander Schauffele claimed his second major title of the year, with a two-stroke win at The Open Championship in July, following his victory at The PGA Championship in May. At Royal Troon, his performance was a masterclass in consistency, with Schauffele exuding a œsense of calm as he approached the 18th hole.
Schauffele’s win capped off a historic year, with all four major titles held by Americans for the first time since 1982.

FORMULA 1

Max Verstappen continued his reign over Formula 1 in 2024, securing his fourth consecutive World Championship title. Amid Verstappen’s dominance, George Russell delivered a standout performance at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, securing a remarkable victory for Mercedes. The season thrilled fans with a mix of consistency, unexpected wins, and intense rivalries on Sport 24 Extra.
As the 2024 season draws to a close, all eyes will be on Lewis Hamilton, who is set to make a high-profile move from Mercedes next season.

SOLHEIM CUP
13 – 15 September 2024
Under the leadership of Captain Stacy Lewis, who displayed exceptional strategy, Team USA triumphed in the 2024 Solheim Cup, defeating Team Europe 15 1/2 to 12 1/2 in a thrilling contest. Key performances, including Nelly Korda’s crucial victory in the final singles match, helped the Americans regain the cup in style, showcasing grit and skill to edge past their European rivals!
